Metuh’s arrest: Buhari not dictating to EFCC – FG

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed
The federal government has flayed the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for describing the arrest of the party’s spokesperson Olisa Metuh by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as a plot to silence the opposition.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, told journalists in Abuja yesterday contrary to the PDP’s claims, President Muhammadu Buhari has not dictated to the EFCC on the issue.

The minister, in an interview with State House correspondents, dismissed the allegations, saying President Muhammadu Buhari was not dictating to any of the anti-corruption agencies.
“I think the first point to make is that this government is not micro-managing any of the anti-graft agencies. I know for a fact that they (anti-graft agencies) don’t contact the president or anybody before they do their job. I think the media also has to do more than they are doing right now, they should investigate these allegations and also make their independent judgment about it.

“Honestly, if the EFCC or ICPC says that they are able to trace certain amounts of money to my account, I don’t want you to believe it, I want you to also ask for proof, do your investigation. I can assure you that this government, no functionary in government, micro-manages or directs the EFCC or ICPC on whom to arrest and whom not to arrest,” he said.

PDP National Secretary Adewale Oladipo had Tuesday described as a crackdown on the party’s members, the arrest of Metuh over alleged collection of about N400m from the Office of the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki.
The money is believed to be part of the $2.1 billion meant for the purchase of arms and ammunition for the fight against Boko Haram in Northeast.
