N5k Stipend To Unemployed: Confusion As VP Osinbajo Counters Buhari

Confusion has taken over the N5000 monthly stipend campaign to the unemployed Nigerians by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC as the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo issued counter statement saying the scheme will still be executed, against President Muhammadu Buhari stance as reported by the media from Saudi Arabia, News Punch understands.

Reports had earlier stated that President Muhammadu Buhari had declared that he would not pay such money as promised, but rather channels the money to other sectors of the economy.

In a what could be perceived as contradictions, Osinbajo on Monday insisted that the money would be paid but to the extremely poor and vulnerable Nigerians because it is the welfare package of the administration.

Osinbajo’s position came as Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura and his Imo State counterpart, Owelle Rochas Okorocha disagreed on the initiative. While Al-Makura supported Buhari’s decision not to pay the stipend, Okorocha said it was a noble project that should be implemented.

The two governors spoke at the State House on Monday after a meeting with Prof. Osinbajo.

The Vice President, through his spokesman, Mr. Laolu Akande, told newsmen yesterday that the payment of the stipends had been captured in the 2016 Budget before the National Assembly but that the scheme would not be extended to unemployed graduates.

Buhari had declared in Saudi Arabia that the payment of the N5,000 stipend which the APC promised Nigerians was not on his priority list because he did not see any reason to pay money to people who don’t work.

Akande however, declared that the N5,000 stipend promise for the vulnerable and poor Nigerians still stands because the 2016 Budget has an allocation of about N500 billion for social investment, including the stipends.

His words: “The budget for 2016 which has been submitted to the National Assembly has made an allocation of half a trillion naira, the first time in the history of this country’s budget where you have that huge chunk of money allocated for social investment.

“In that N500 billion which is half a trillion naira, close to about 20 percent of the entire budget, there are six social safety net programmes. And one of them is the conditional cash transfer where government is going to pay N5,000 monthly to the vulnerable and extremely poor Nigerians. That promise stands.

“The President never promised to pay unemployed graduates N5,000; the President never made that promise and the government never made that claim that it will pay N5,000 to unemployed graduates.

“The programme for unemployed graduates is the direct creation of half a million teaching jobs so that they will be trained; 500,000 unemployed graduates will be trained to teach and they will be deployed to teach, while they are looking for their career paths or jobs. That still stands!

“In addition to that, there is also a scheme to train 370, 000 non-graduate youth for skill acquisition and vocational training. During the time of that training, they will also be paid.

“So, the President did not say that he would be giving unemployed graduates N5,000. The N5,000 monthly stipend, which is already in the budget, is for the vulnerable Nigerians and the extremely poor, and this year by the grace of God, once the budget is okay, one million extremely poor Nigerians will receive N5,000 monthly.”

Al-Makura declared that Buhari was at liberty to renege on the promise and should not therefore not be challenged.

The governor pointed out that Buhari reserved the right to change his mind or review the promise based on the prevailing realities.

The governor told journalists after he met with Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa to discuss security and power supply challenges in Nasarawa State that “the President is the person that can tell you precisely how he is working on promises and interventions that he has created by his ingenuity.

“And if at any point in time the president is reviewing that issue, I think he is the only person to do that because what he is doing is in the best interest of the country. So, it is not challengeable by anybody, whatever his position.”

The governor said he discussed with the Vice President the long-standing communal clashes between Funlani and farmers and Agatu communities in Nasarawa and neighbouring Benue State.

Okorocha, who met with Osinbajo, told State House correspondents that the N5,000 stipend promised Nigerian jobseekers by the APC remains a fantastic policy that will be implemented “one way or the other” in spite of the President’s reluctance.

His words: “To be honest with you, it is a great idea, but there are many ways to give that support. Sometimes, it could be in cash which has its own challenges. Handling of that is also in itself a wonderful and great idea.

“Take for instance, in Imo State, they used to now, have introduced what is called empowerment. They buy motorcycles and give people N5,000 or N 10,000.

“For me, that is not my style. My style is to declare free education-from primary, secondary to university. Nobody pays one naira in Imo State.

“The very poor people who have to ensure a lot of social inconveniences of school fees is no longer dong that, what has happened is that he has saved that money to produce further wealth.

“If you keep money through that system, it creates more impact than physical cash. Physical cash sometimes creates more problems.

“So, it is great idea, we have to do it one way or the other as time comes,” he said.

2019: Trouble Brews In APC As Kwankwaso Begins Fierce, Violent Campaign Against Buhari

2019 may still be far away, but fresh indication suggests that all is not well withing the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and the tussles ahead the next political dispensation may have begun as former Kano State Governor, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso have begun a fierce and violent campaign against the incumbent, President Muhammadu Buhari.

the ruling party is considering a sanction to be meted on former Kano State Governor for turning condolent visit of the Kano State Governor, Abdulahi Ganduje, who lost his mother few days ago. Some thugs, believed to be supporters of Kwankwaso turned the mourning arena to violent campaign grand where dangerous weapons were openly used with various chants of Buhari be replaced with Kwankwaso by 2019.

The immediate-past governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is facing suspension from the ruling All Progressive Congress for organising a “violent rally” in the state while paying a condolence visit to the governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, over the death of his mother. Addressing journalists in Kano on Thursday, the state party chairman, Umar Doguwa, said Mr. Kwankwaso, a serving senator, had exhibited “acts of indiscipline which should not be allowed to go unpunished”.

He said the party’s leadership and elders had approved the constitution of a disciplinary committee to penalise Mr. Kwankwaso. According to him, the condolence visit was deliberately turned to a violent rally to cause mayhem in the state, abuse the governor and President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The party and its leadership hierarchy, as enshrined in APC constitution, must be respected at all times by party members in respective of their position.

“The party leader today in Kano is nobody but Governor Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, who also must be respected by every person. “The party would leave no stone unturned in ensuring discipline, orderliness and loyalty as prescribed by the constitution of the APC.

“Such case of party indiscipline committed by Senator Kwankwaso will be thoroughly investigated and dealt with in accordance with the constitution of the party,”

Mr. Doguwa said. The party chairman also alleged that the senator hired a crowd that crossed over the perimeter fence of the Kano airport and damaged some installations.

“When the hired crowd was denied access to the airport premises, they climbed over fences, breaking the iron barriers and destroying the Security scanners. All the pictures are available for confirmation.

“Also, the hired thugs were busy distributing presidential campaign posters, car stickers reading

‘Kwankwassiya 2019, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for President, among others,” he said. The APC chairman said when other dignitaries from all walks of life – including those from the opposition party – came to condole with the governor, none of them made their visits violent. He said despite the fact that the funeral rites of the governor’s mother were conducted with decorum, humility, civility and decency in keeping with religious and cultural values of the people, Mr. Kwankwaso dishonoured the dead by holding a “violent rally”.

“During the senator’s visit, there was a violent rally and open show of thuggery as his supporters were seen openly wielding machetes, swords and other dangerous weapons,” he said. Mr. Doguwa also said the party frowned at Mr. Kwankwaso’s supporters’ call for replacement of Mr. Buhari with Mr. Kwankwaso by 2019.

Buhari fires DG Budget

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Tijjani Mohammed Abdullahi as Director-General of Budget after firing the incumbent, Aliyu Yahaya Gusau.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, in a statement yesterday,  described Malam Abdullahi  as a certified accountant and a banker of repute with experience in managing public finance.

He said the new Director-General of Budget was expected to work with the Minister of Budget and National Planning to deliver on the mandates of the Budget Office.
The presidential aide said Buhari had also appointed Mr Ben Ifeanyi Akabueze as Special Adviser to the President on National Planning. He will work with the Minister of National Planning Udoma Udo-Udoma.
“Mr Akabueze was a former commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos State.
He had worked in senior management positions in Citi Bank, Fidelity Bank, United Bank for Africa, NAL Merchant Bank, Sterling Bank and BIA Consulting Limited, among others.
“He is Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers; Fellow, Institute of Credit Administrators and Honorary Fellow, Chartered Institute of Bankers”, Adesina said.
The sacking of Gusau, who was appointed by Buhari in August last year, came in the wake of the budget fiasco which forced the National Assembly to suspend the budget defence by ministers last week.
Many unapproved figures running into billions had found their way into the budget.
These were only discovered when ministers and top officials turned up for budget defence before National Assembly committees.
Reports of errors, padding up of figures, changing of whole ministries’ budgets, smuggling of strange items, among others, were made during the budget defences at the National Assembly.
The controversy over the 2016 budget proposal started last month with the allegation that it went missing in the Senate.
In an interview with State House correspondents yesterday after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, Senate Leader Mohammed Ali Ndume said the executive proposed the budget in a rush.
He said that was why some controversies were trailing the budget, emphasising that the National Assembly was not “holding on” to it.
Ndume said this was the first time the legislature and the executive were collectively working on a national budget proposal to ensure its implementation.
“This budget was done in a rush, and you know there are some issues that are cropping up. It is no longer going to be business as usual. So, those unusual things, if detected, we’ll work on them,” he said.
On why the Senate suspended the passage of the budget, Ndume said they are working on it daily.
He said:  “The matter is not about a date [of the budget’s passage]. If we can finish it today, we will hand it over for signature tomorrow. In those days, we just passed budgets that were normally not implemented.”
Last week, Health Minister Professor Isaac Adewole shocked members of the Senate Committee on Health when he told them that the original budget of his ministry had been largely distorted.
Adewole urged the committee to discard the proposal and await a new estimate to be re-submitted.
Also, Information Minister Lai Mohammed,    during a  budget defence, disowned a provision of N398 million for computers by his ministry, saying it was strange to him.

Federal government recovers $14 million from Omokore's firm

 – The Nigerian federal government has recovered $14 million from Jide Omokore.

The Nigerian federal government has succeeded in compelling the Chairman of Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Nigeria Limited, Jide Omokore, to cough up $14m (roughly N2.8 billion).

The figure comes from the crude oil royalties his company failed to remit to the federal treasury.

Insider sources said the funds were supposed to have been paid between 2011 and 2012 by Atlantic Energy which was awarded oil assets by the Goodluck Jonathan government shortly after it was incorporated in 2010.

The money was finally paid into the federal government’s account with JP Morgan Chase on January 29 after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) began to investigate the company.

“The investigation of tax defaulters in the dollar-soaked oil industry is continuing,” an EFCC source said.

“Those who failed to willingly pay up stand the risk of arrest and prosecution for tax fraud.”

EFCC agents questioned Omokore about the affair on January 27 and also raided his offices.

Omokore’s company recently issued a statement saying it was getting back on course after submitting its plan to settle outstanding financial commitments to the Nigerian authorities.

Incorporated as Atlantic Drilling Energy Concept Limited on July 19, 2010, it signed a Strategic Alliance Agreement with the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) shortly afterwards.

The NPDC is the upstream production subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

Under the agreement, Atlantic took charge of four oil blocks- OML 26 FHN, OML 30 Shoreline, OML 34 Niger-Delta Oil and OML 42 Neconde.

It was to provide funds, technical services, and drill and sell crude oil.

The company was later accused of extracting crude oil and giving only a fraction of its worth to government.

In 2012, according to NNPC insiders, Atlantic Energy paid $168m into the government’s account, but lifted about three million barrels – valued at over $350 million.

In 2013, it also lifted about two million barrels of crude valued at about $240million, but paid only $68million.

Similarly, in 2014, Atlantic Energy paid nothing but lifted about 500,000 barrels of crude oil valued at $54 million.

Jide Omoroke is a businessman originally from Kogi state.

One of the most influential business magnates in Nigeria, he has major assets in the oil and gas industries.

He is also a noted philanthropist and is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party.

5 reasons tribalism and racism persist in the world

– Who is going to save the world from the day-to-day challenges of tribalism and racism

– These twin problems have simple remedy if people decide to take the prescribed medication

– Killings will continue in any part of the world that is rife with these twin problems

An image of a white police officer beating a black man who is pleading by raising his hands which is one of the problems of white-black racism

One of the issues that human beings have mostly debated upon is on tribalism and racism. These twin problems come in different shades in different societies.

Among the Igbo speaking people found in the Southeastern part of Nigeria, there are some people seen as outcast. These people are called ‘Osu.’ The interesting thing about the Osu people is that they are also of Igbo descent but they are seen as people who should not be associated with based on some myths that they were accursed.

This Osu issue prevents the Osus from being recognised as human beings and as bonafide members of the Igbo society. Marriages and other social relationships are totally cut off from the Osus. Up to this present moment, derogation of the Osus is still rife among the Igbos.

In India, the form of tribal problem there is called the ‘Caste System.’ It is a form of tribalism that the white Indians see mostly the black Indians as nobody. They see them as sub-humans.

Coming to Nigeria, the major bane of growth and development is tribalism. A Yoruba man does not really trust a Hausa man and an Igbo man even if both of them are upright, He prefers his fellow Yoruba man even that one is a scoundrel.

A Hausa man sees the Igbo man as a business fraudster and a Yoruba man as inferior to him, while an Igbo sees a Hausa man as a dumb person and a Yoruba man with low business acumen even if both are very kind to him.

This vicious cycle continues on and on without any solution in sight for donkey years.

1. The white superiority phenomenon

There was a time in the United States of America where blacks were never allowed to attend the same schools the white children attended. This problem lingered on before the likes of Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X stood and spoke against it. A similar thing happened in South Africa where blacks were killed in the guise of the Apartheid system of government.

The real and lasting solution to tribalism and racism was explicitly stated by Almighty Allah in Chapter 49 verse 12 of the Glorious Qu’ran:

“O mankind, We have created you from the fertilisation process between a male and a female. And we made you tribes, race, nations and countries so that you should recognise yourselves. The best person among you is the person that fears his Lord (not the white man or black man). Surely, Almighty Allah has knowledge of the person that is not tribalistic or racist, and He will give you details about all acts of racism and tribalism all the day of judgement.”

The above verse shows why these twin problems should be abhored by all and sundry in order to live a life of peace.

2. Our Creator needs not decide for us

In the different systems of government practised all over the world, only a few countries decide that they input some of the words of Almighty Allah in the ways they do their things. Human beings have the notion that by relying on Godly advice is like putting themselves in bondage.

They ask themselves, how are they going to relate with people of different orientation who are not of their type. Therefore, they see people of different languages and colours as people who should be shown cold shoulders always.

3. Culture supersedes all things

Some cultures in Nigeria for instance are alien to anything that comes from a person of other culture.

There is always a campaign about unity in diversity among the different tribes in the country. People only pay lip service to this. What happens afterwards is that one tribe is always trying to annihilate the other tribe using its political strength or numeric advantage. This is one of the reasons some heartless Fulani herdsmen have been killing people in some parts of the country. The recent mayhem being the attack in Adamawa state.

4. It is easier to rule the world with tribalism and racism

There is a wrong belief that a group of people can only become subservient to another if the trump cards of racism and tribalism are played. This is the chief reason some inhumane world leaders instigate a tribe or a race against another. Noteworthy to mention is the Hutsi and Tutsi civil war in Rwanda where there was a genocide and a whole tribe was almost wiped off.

5. Parental and societal influence

Some parents do not help matters. Right from the cradle, they have been influencing their children on how to passionately detest people who do not speak their language or who do not have the same skin colour as they have. In this wise, these children carry on the negative teachings from their guardians which later manifest in the way they behave towards others when they are adults or grown-ups.

Kanu sacks lawyer as court denies his bail

The Radio Biafra director Nnamdi Kanu is currently in the Federal High Court Abuja for consideration of his bail application.

After a long wait and expectation, the court has announced the commencement of the ruling which will be coming in next 30 minutes.

The director of the Radio Biafra has withdrawn one of his lawyers, M. U Udechukwu from representing him in court.

Following the call for appearances, Udechukwu who argued the bail application in favour of kanu drew the attention of the court to letter said to have been addressed to the judge, John Tsoho.

While Tsoho confirmed the letter, he said he believed it was a domestic matter and not to be on record.

He said: “There is a handwritten letter addressed to my humble self by the first defendant.”

The judge added that the first defendant had stated in the letter that during the last hearing, the lawyer that argued his case was not who he instructed to represent him.

Meanwhile, the lead counsel, Chuks Muoma addressing the court said he did not see the need for the controversy in the courtroom.

His words: “As embarrassing as this appears, I will advise that he take the ruling of the summons of bail which he led and argued and then handover.”

On his own part, Udechukwu addressing the court said it was important to be on record.

“My lord, it is already on record that I represented the defendant without an instruction from him, I don’t want to implicate my matter and also avoid been summoned by the disciplinary committee,” Udechukwu said.

Udechukwu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) further announced to the court that he is standing down and apologizing for his actions.

Following Udechukwu’s stand down, the lead counsel announced his appearance and that of another SAN, Ifeanyi Ejiofor for the first defendant.

Kanu had earlier expressed his reservation for the Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the same court, saying he has no confidence in him.

So the case was transferred to Justice John Tsoho.

During the last sitting on January 25, Kanu’s counsel, Chuks Mouma had asked the court to postpone the consideration of bail request.

After the application, Justice John Tsoho had suspended the trial till today for ruling on Kanu’s bail.

Federal High  Court declined the bail application by pro-Biafra agitator, Nnamdi Kanu and his associates, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, orderd accelerated hearing.

At his ruling Tsoho said that as submitted by the respondent, the fact that Kanu has two passports – Nigerian and British – indicates the possibility of his escaping trial.

How I Make N300,000 Monthly From Begging - Suspect

Many Lagos citizens might have fallen to the antic of this beggar who disguised as a sick patient and armed with fake drug prescription paper begged his way into six-figure.

Kehinde Olatubosun, 56, who is from Ibadan, Oyo state disclosed that he earned N300, 000 monthly. Amount most graduates can only dream of earning, that is what this beggar cum drug addict earned per month from his trade.

However, he ran out of luck on Saturday night, January 23, when he along 18 other drug addicts was arrested by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos Police Command at a joint in Ipodo area of Ikeja.

Olatubosun confessed that he made over N300, 000 monthly from begging in Ikeja.

According to Premium Times report, the RRS had on Monday night traced a stolen phone to the joint, leading to the arrest of a three-man gang of mobile phone thieves, three hard drug peddlers and 13 drug addicts.

The suspect disclosed that he made over N10,000 daily begging at the Mobolaji Bank Anthony Roundabout; beside the Lagos State  University Teaching Hospital; Toyin street.

Olatubosun said: “All days of the week, I’m always in Mobolaji Bank Anthony Roundabout, Toyin Street roundabout and Opebi. At times, I collaborate with beggars. Whatever we make, we share but I get a larger share,” said the suspect.

“What I do is that, I get LASUTH drug prescription papers. I get it from their waste bin. With this in my hand, I convince motorists, passengers and passersby that I have a relative who is in dire need of money to buy drugs and I show them the prescription papers.

“This is what I have been doing since I was deported from Germany in 2004. Before the deportation, I was working as Electrical Engineer in Bauhusa, Colon, Germany. I was in Germany for 12 years before I was deported.”

The suspect further stated that he was deported from Germany after he was caught in possession of hard drugs.

“I have four children. Two are in Germany with my wife. One is in Texas, United States and another in Nigeria,” he said.

“Unfortunately, all the money I make from this begging goes into drugs. Day after day, I am always there, seven days a week. I make more money on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. I make more than N10,000:00 on weekends.

“As I speak to you, I’m not on drugs but I am experiencing withdrawal symptoms, that is, the effect of not taking drugs for sometimes,” he said.

He explained that he was arrested at the Ipodo drug joint when the RRS men raided the place adding that it was the first time he would be arrested.

Zaria Massacre: Sheikh Zakzaky Sent To France For Treatment

Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, has been flown abroad for medical attention.

The Embattled leader was flown to France or treatment of gun shot injuries he suffered during the encounter between his supporters and members of the Nigerian army last year.

The news was confirmed by military sources in Abuja on Saturday, January 23.

Several security sources who are knowledgeable in the matter, revealed that due to the seriousness of the injuries the Shiite leader sustained a clash with the army, he was secretly flown to France by the Nigerian government some weeks ago for treatment before being returned to the country two weeks ago.

Since the clash between the sect and the Military, his whereabouts has been shrouded in secrecy until it was revealed that he was moved from Kaduna to a safe house in Abuja belonging to one of the security services.

One of the sources said: “It is true that the federal government flew him out of the country for treatment. He was stabilized before he was brought back to Nigeria. The government did not want to take chances by keeping him in the country. We did not want a repeat of the incidence with the late leader of the Boko Haram movement whose death in custody exacerbated the crisis in the north east”.

It would be recalled that during the bloody encounter between members of the Shiites and the Nigerian army, several members of the sect were killed while many others sustained various degrees of injuries with some still on admission at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Shika near Zaria.

The showed occured, following an alleged rift over a blockade mounted by members of the sect along the Zaria-sokoto road. The road block reportedly prevented the convoy of the chief of Army staff from passing through despite several entreaties.

It was in the wake during this tussle that a bloody clash ensued, leaving Sheikh El-Zakzaky with several gun shot wounds, with some reports claiming that one of his eyes was affected during the showdown.

Meanwhile, some Kano residents have written a letter of complaint to the governer of Kano state about Shiites’ dangerous activities in the Kofar Waika area of the state, the residents called for the demolition of the residence of late Muhammad Turi which has been converted to a shrine.

Fresh hurdles hit North’s biggest power plant

Fresh hurdles are threatening to make the multi-billion naira 215 megawatts power plant in Kaduna to miss completion target for the third time. The federal government awarded the contract in November 2009 to General Electric and Rockson Engineering for a dual thermal plant using Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO) and natural gas, to be located in Kudenda, Kaduna. It had a December 31, 2013 completion period.

The contract missed the initial deadline for nearly two years due to lack of suitable trucks in Nigeria at the time to transport the turbines from Onne Port in Rivers state to Kaduna. However, as another deadline approaches, it was revealed that a “disagreement” has recently developed between the federal ministry of power and one of the contractors on the mode of fuelling the power plant. Sources said the disagreement could further extend the N23 billion project completion period. Official documents obtained by this newspaper shows that the power ministry  had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Greenville Oil and Gas Company Limited in November 2014 to supply the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) required to operate the plant. More than a year later, the agreement did not transform to a Gas Sales and Purchase Agreement (GSPA) “because of the lacklustre attitude of some ministry officials,” multiple sources privy to the project said. A source told Daily Trust that the plant which was expected to take-off before June this year was allegedly being frustrated by the project office in the ministry headed by Mrs Briscilla Sabke. She is said to have issues with the trucking of LNG fuel to the plant. She is in favour of using Automotive Fuel Oil (AGO - diesel) which experts say would create additional cost of $70million annually to run the plant. They added that the additional cost apart, the gas pipeline to connect to the plant from the south will take years to construct and consequently cause more delays. But Mrs Sabke was said to have argued that it would take only two years to get the pipelines ready, insisting that trucking gas to the plant would destroy the road. Energy experts, who spoke to this newspaper, even said the plant had extended beyond six months of its completion timeline with an additional cost of $2million. The initial relocation of the plant to its current site, a source said, had already cost the government one million Euros. Some equipment are still at Onne Port awaiting clearance including the black-start diesel generators and other transmission equipment since 2015, it was learnt. The clearance delay was attributed to missing Import Duty Exemption Certificates (IDEC), a source said. Other factor that may delay the plant even if the fuel supply arrangement is complete is the incomplete power evacuation component that would convey power from the plant to the Kudenda substation. The contractor, Skipper is said to be owed N870million and four million Euros. Its 132 kilovolt substation being handled by the Rockson Engineering is incomplete while another 123KV transmission line to the Mando substation valued at about $6million is yet to be done, a ministry official said. When contacted, Mrs Sapke told our reporter that all queries should be directed officially to the ministry as she is not authorise to speak. A ministry official said the plant is designed since 2009 to be dual-fired because natural gas is not available in the area. “It can use both natural gas and diesel and if Greenville said there is an agreement, then an MOU is not the same with a contract agreement. They submitted a proposal on supplying LNG. It is an ongoing process,” a source said. But a Greenville official said several attempts to discuss the issues with Mrs Sabke were not successful. He added that the contractor had already incurred cost of over $200 million by setting up facilities in Port Harcourt and Kaduna for the fuel supply contract.   Another source said the project manager’s attitude towards Greenville may

NYSC seeks agencies’ support

The Director General, National Youth Service Corps(NYSC), Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi has called for more support from  organisations, agencies and individuals  as the number of graduates being mobilised have become enormous. He said the federal government could  no longer sustain the scheme alone.

Brigadier General Olawumi made the remarks at the 2016 desk officers workshop organised by the NYSC foundation in Abuja. Represented by Director, Corp Mobilisation, Mr. Anthony Ani, the director general said the government’s economy was dwindling hence there was the need to support the scheme to help sustain the welfare of the corps members.

He said the NYSC foundation had been supporting the scheme but pointed  out that it would  not be able to carry the burden alone hence the need for more support from other organisations. Chairman, Board of Trustees of the foundation, Abubakar Abdullahi said the foundation had  been doing a lot to support the scheme.

N/Assembly deletes Mark, 8 others as serving senators

The Management of National Assembly has finally deleted the bio-data and photographs of former Senate President, David Mark and eight other senators from its  website, our correspondents report. Twice, our correspondents had reported that Mark and 11 other senators that were sacked from the senate last year by the Court of Appeal were being paraded as serving lawmakers on the website of the National Assembly.

Mark had been at the National Assembly since 1999, representing Benue South Senatorial District until November last year when his election was nullified. He was Senate President from 2007 until his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost control of the senate in 2015. Checks on the website of the National Assembly yesterday showed that the bio-data and photograph of Mark who is set to contest with Daniel Onjeh, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the February 18 re-un election has been removed. Also, the photographs and bio-data of Uche Lilian Ekwunife who was also sacked late last year have been deleted on the website. Until last weekend, she was being paraded as a serving senator representing Anambra central on the website of the National Assembly. Others that were expunged from the website are: George Thompson Sekibo(PDP, Rivers East), Olaka Johnson Nwogu(PDP, Rivers South-East), Osinakachukwu Ideozu(PDP, Rivers West), Abdulrahman Abubakar(APC, Kogi east), and Mao Ohuabunwa (PDP, Abia North). However, Nneji Athan Achonu (PDP, Imo North), Mohammed Abdulsalami Ohiare(APC, Kogi Central) and  Ighoyota Amori(PDP) Delta central) who were also sacked last year are still serving senators on the website. While the pictures and bio-data of Achonu and Ohiare are still on the website, only the bio-data of Amori was seen there yesterday. Meanwhile, the bio-data of Abubakar Yusuf Abubakar who replaced Abba Marafa Bashir of the Taraba Central senatorial district in the senate has been uploaded. Our correspondents observed that his picture is yet to adorn the website.

Anti-graft war, 2019 and PDP’s internal wrangling

Barely seven months into a new political dispensation in Nigeria, almost all the policies, actions and inactions of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration are being linked to the 2019 general elections, especially by people who now far from the corridors of power.

While there is verbal war, between the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari’s ascension to power has spurred a new phenomenon, intra-party wrangling in the new opposition party. On the one hand, the PDP is accusing the APC of high-handedness, selective justice, persecution and intimidation of its members, all in an effort to maintain power beyond 2019. On the other hand, forces within the party are at one another’s throat as to where the party should stand, especially in respect to national discourse.

While some members, who were probably side-lined at the height of re-election bid of former president Goodluck Jonathan, clearly see Buhari’s anti-graft initiative as a good omen, others, who allegedly made fortunes during the last elections, view the move as vendetta and a clear show of force by the APC government ahead of future polls. The cases of alleged graft by the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, PDP’s national publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh and many others have remained a prominent reference point for opposition leaders. Similarly, the PDP has punctured most of the verdicts passed by various election tribunals and Court of Appeal that handled the governorship, states as well as the National Assembly cases, which to a great extent favoured the APC. In fact, some PDP officials have convinced themselves that the APC is on a political conquest, desperately re-writing all the good things which the former ruling party did in the last 16 years, all aimed at scoring political goals. In a chat with journalists in Abuja on Monday, Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, who won a second term after a fierce encounter with Chief Timipre Sylva, his main challenger from the APC, put the blame squarely on those around Buhari. “What I have seen is an insufficient attention by the federal team, which is the team around the president. They seem to have taken their eyes off the nation’s economy and national security imperatives. They seem to be focusing more on political conquest and expansion of the sphere for the authority of their party,” he said. Notably, the PDP has said the prosecution of Dasuki is being motivated by Buhari’s purported plan to seek a second term. The opposition party said the president and the APC are scared that the ex-NSA may be nursing a presidential ambition. Not long before the Dasuki-gate tsunami swept his legs, Metuh said it was unfortunate that Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade had become a war between the APC and the PDP. “Since they have confirmed that this is what the anti-corruption crusade is all about, the APC is obviously seeking to destroy the PDP so that it can push through Buhari’s second tenure in 2019 without opposition from the PDP” said the PDP spokesman. “It was appalling that the APC and its leaders, who gleefully and unjustifiably poured invectives on former president Goodluck Jonathan in the guise of playing the role of an opposition party, would now not want to condone criticisms,” he added. Metuh said in a statement that Dasuki’s trial was a sign that the ruling party felt threatened by his wide political and security network, which he may use, should he decide to contest for the presidency in 2019 on the PDP platform. “The APC and its leaders fear that Dasuki, given his vast political and security network, may be harbouring a presidential ambition, more so that the PDP has zoned its presidential ticket to the north,” he said. However, indications soon emerged that Buhari was not looking back, as few days after Metuh signed the release that expressed the PDP’s position on Dasuki, he too was surreptitiously arrested by the EFCC, over alleged N400 million deals. Metuh and Dasuki, alongside many PDP notables are now in custody. In its response, the APC said the opposition party was just chasing shadows, instead of addressing the issues that prompted the arrest of its stalwarts. The party’s national

Education, feeding now my worries, cries mom of quadruplets

Her identity was not strange to residents of Ajaka community in Sagamu local government of Ogun State, a woman gave birth to quadruplets on Thursday. The cry of babies from the throughway into the compound provided the final clue, as Mrs. Olamide Adesola Ololade was already outside. After tending to one of the sleeping babies, she attempted to settle down on the couch, but another baby began to cry from the bedroom. Calmly, she laid the first one on a sofa close to her and made for the room again. This time, she came out with two babies and dropped them beside the first one.

Embroiled in the drama of caring for four babies at the same time, she was asked how she copes. “As you can see, I’m just thanking God. If after eight years of waiting for the fruit of the womb and I am blessed with four at once, who am I to question God?” Lamide, 40, recalled that a cleric once told her that he saw more than three children in her future. She said: “You know when you are looking for something, you go everywhere in search. My marriage was going into eight years and you can imagine the frustration. I was optimistic of having a baby anyway, but honestly not this number. When the second scan at OOUTH confirmed that they are four, I took to prayers and faith.” “It has been two months and some days now. On February 6, they will be three months and they are doing well as you can see,” beamed the happy mother. She was rounding up when the one she was feeding began to cry, again. “She has to have about a bottle and a half before she is okay,” Lolade said. This prompted the question of feeding and she said: “They finished a tin of baby food in 12 hours today.” Mrs. Ololade, whose husband is also a local government staff like her (she is at Ikenne, as Community Health Extension Officer), is at Mowe Health centre in Obafemi Owode council area is having about 12 years in service before retirement. And this worries Iya Iberin, because of feeding, and education. “10 to 12 years time, they will be going into secondary school and what would happen? This is why I’m appealing to well-meaning Nigerians to come to our aid. We are trying to cope now with gestures from family, colleagues at work and others, but my concern is about their future.” The presence of the quadruplets’ grandmother, Mrs. Adijat Bangbelu, revealed that the Ololades had temporarily relocated to Lolade’s fathers’ house. She said: “When we settle down, we will go back to our home at Isara. Now, he shuttles between this place and our home.” Her mother has been of tremendous support. “I can only thank God. Whatever support you can give them too, God shall multiple you in folds. They are great babies. They are doing fine too,” the Grandma said. A phone call to the husband, Samson Ololade, who was at work when Daily Trust visited, echoed joy and praise.

APC Blames Jonathan For Bad Economy And Fall Of Naira

Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reiterated its earlier stand that the country’s present woes are as a result of the financial recklessness of the immediate past administration of Goodluck Jonathan.

The APC’s position was stated by the acting national publicity secretary of the party, Comrade Timi Frank who granted an interview with Vanguard yesterday, January 17.

According to Comrade Frank, the financial recklessness exhibited by the previous government was responsible for the fall of Naira and Nigeria’s dwindling economy.

He went on to say that the Jonathan administration “squandered” the resources of the country, adding that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari did not meet anything on ground with which to run the country.

He therefore asked Nigerians  to be patient with the Buhari administration stressing that the president was committed to righting the wrongs of the past.

He said: “Personally, I am worried about the current situation of the economy but again I am letting you know it is not our fault because this is what we met. We met a bastardised system. We took over from a government that destroyed our economy. The PDP government embezzled the wealth of our nation. So our economy is something we are fighting to survive.

“And I can assure you that our government is taking every necessary step to make sure we revive our economy and that everything will come to stay. Clearly, I can tell you that this is why the President is moving round to make sure our economy stands again.

“The current situation of our country today, I am asking Nigerians not to blame President Buhari because he is working very hard to make sure things go well with Nigerians that voted APC government to power. They will not be disappointed.

“So the blame goes back again to the previous government, the PDP government which squandered the resources of our country. And today, Nigeria as a nation is suffering because of them. But by the grace of God, things will be fine again.”

It is not clear if Comrade Frank has the backing of the APC in his recent tirade against the Jonathan government as he has been having a running battle with the leadership of his party.

Although, information minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who happens to be the immediate past publicity secretary of the APC, had earlier held the same position as Comrade Frank.

Just last week, Comrade Frank accused the APC national chairman, Chief John Oyegun and national secretary, Mallam Mai-Mala Buni, of breaching the party’s constitution by taking over functions assigned to his office.

It will be recalled that about four weeks ago, Oyegun was asked by journalists during a press briefing to state who speaks for the party after the exit of Mohammed.

The APC chairman stated that it was either himself or the national secretary that had the right to officially speak for the party, adding that arrangement had been made for the national secretary to perform the duties of the national publicity secretary pending the election of a substantive officer, which automatically means the party is not considering Frank for the role.

Meanwhile, the man at the centre of it all, Goodluck Jonathan seems to be focused on his new found role as an international advocate for good governance and free and fair elections especially in Africa.

On Thursday, January 14, Jonathan added to his growing list of international awards after being honoured by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), in Atlanta, Georgia.

Earlier this month, Jonathan was named the ‘Person of the Year’ by The African Sun Times, Africa’s number one and largest newspaper in the United States of America (USA).

President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed his intentions to redeem the unfulfilled pledge he made to the victorious Golden Eaglets in 1985.

He made these vows when he hosted the team at the Dodan barracks on their arrival from China where the inaugural FIFA U-17 World Cup was held in 1985.

Dalung told reporters: “The 21th of January 2016 has been approved by President Buhari as the day for the reward for those who have made us proud.”

“Indeed the federal government has approved a comprehensive package for all athletes and is not limited to football but even scrabble, basketball and others that have made the country proud.

Buhari Presented Jonathan’s Budget, Former CBN Governor Reveals

In a shocking statement, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revelaed that the 2016 budget presented by President Muhammadu Buhari was the same as the one presented by immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan.

Prof. Charles Soludo said the present budget is more of the same to the previous ones noting that defeating old bad ideas could be better that initiating new ones.

He said this while speaking at the 13th Daily Trust Dialogue in Abuja on Thursday.

“The present budget is more of the same to the previous ones. Mr. Vice President [Prof. Yemi Osinbajo], If you scale your budget on the scale of GDP, it is almost the same with the previous government.

“It has a historic 37% deficit as we never had it before. The truth is that you are borrowing 37% with only 30 per cent on capital project,” Prof. Soludo stressed.

Meanwhile, chairman, senate committee on media and public affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi has said that no statement made by any Senator during the plenary today can be interpreted to mean an admission that the 2016 budget is missing.

Emir Sanusi Warns Against Repeat Of 1966 Coup

Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, has warned that Nigeria may experience a repeat of the January 15 1966 military coup if some parts of the country continue in violence annd disunity.

The emir made the disclosure on Thursday, January 14, in his brief remarks during the 50th commemoration of the death of the Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello.

He pointed out that it was such issues of disaffection from a section of the country then that ignited the coup that claimed the life of the premier of Northern Nigeria, the Sardauna of Sokoto, and other national leaders in the country at that time.

Sanusi said Nigerians have moved beyond the 1966 coup, but according to him, it appears history is being repeated.

He stressed the importance of letting bye-gones be bye-gones, saying: “We must not allow history to repeat itself.”

The former CBN governor maintained that Nigerians who are allegedly fanning the embers of violence and disunity of the country should stop it to avoid a backlash.

He noted that every section of the country had at one time tasted power and as well produced bad or good leaders, adding that all sections of the country must come together and move on as one country.

“We must not fail to learn from the past. We cannot get back to religious and ethnic divides. We are calling for tolerance and peace but we will not be allowed to be disrespected,” the emir of Kano said.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Sule emphasized the need for northern leaders to ensure the good values left behind by Sardauna and his colleagues were not thrown overboard.

In his keynote address, entitled ‘The North, 50 Years After Sir Ahmadu Bello’, Maitama Sule noted that in the days of the late Sarduana, northern Nigeria was a united region.

He noted saying: “We were our brothers’ keepers, we are no longer our brothers’ keepers, things have gone astray.

“We used to respect our elders and the constituted authority, but today the respect is no longer there, today there is chaos in politics, immorality in the society. We need leaders, not rulers.”

“If we follow the philosophy of Sardauna, Nigeria will be better for it. However, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel for a better Nigeria,” the ambassador said.

However, he expressed optimism that under the present leadership Nigeria will overcome its problems.

Also in his own speech, the former governor of Niger state and chairman of the board of trustees of the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, Alhaji Muazu Babangida Aliyu, described Sarduana as a generous northern leader who carried everybody along irrespective of religious and ethnic differences.

He expressed regret that with all Sarduana’s power and influence, he died a poor man with no bank account because he never amassed wealth from public funds.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to be the special guest of honour at the 50th anniversary of the demise of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto . The president is expected to launch a special edition of New Nigeria Newspapers and a photo exhibition.

The Kano bride was found brutally murdered by unknown person(s) in August 2015 and there were no traces as to who could have perpetrated the dastardly act.

Goodluck Jonathan Wins Another Int'l Heard

In a rather amazing fashion, Nigeria’s former president, Goodluck Jonathan has made history with another international award in Atlanta, USA.

This is coming on the heels of local and international recognition which has come his way since he conceded defeat to President Muhammadu Buhari after losing at the 2015 presidential election.

The former president on Thursday, January 14, 2016, added to his growing list of international awards after being honoured by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), in Atlanta, Georgia.

According to Vanguard, he got the Presidential Award in recognition of his leadership in advancing human rights, social justice and the fight for universal freedom.

The conference was founded by the late American Civil Right leader, Martin Luther King Jr, in January 1957 and is currently led by Dr Charles Steele Jnr

This award is one of the activities which will take place ahead of the Martin Luther King Jr Day which comes up on Monday, January 18, 2016.

By this arrangement, ex-president Jonathan becomes the first African leader to be so honored and has gained recognition by the president of the SCLC, who has promised to work with the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation to advance the cause of peace around the world and to bridge the gap between people of color in the Diaspora and Africa.
After receiving the award, the ex-president appreciated the initiator, saying the recognition will enable him work harder for the advancement of democracy.

He said: “I thank the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, for inviting and honoring me today, and especially so, as this invitation comes right about the period when the world stands still in recognition of the selfless sacrifice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. When we think of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), it is virtually impossible to separate this worthy body from its founder, the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, or from epoch making landmark events of the American

FUEL SCARCITY HIT ENUGU STATE

Fuel scarcity resurfaced in Enugu metropolis on Wednesday as petroleum marketers closed down their filling stations, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports. Our correspondent who monitored the situation in the state capital reports that virtually all the major and independent marketers closed their stations. NAN reports that only the NNPC Mega Station on Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway was dispensing products to the a long queue of cars on its premises. Commuters, including school children, were stranded due to paucity of commercial vehicles just as the roads were free of the usual traffic.
Meanwhile, transport fares have increased by 100 per cent as commercial buses charged between N80 and N100 as against N50 per drop. Some motorists who spoke to NAN said the situation may be connected with ongoing monitoring of compliance with new pump price of N86.50k per litre by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR). A civil servant, Mr Samuel Nwodo, said the marketers closed their filling stations for fear of being sanctioned by the DPR.
“Some of the marketers have refused to adjust their pump price until they exhausted their old stock. I wonder when they will do that.
“I have gone round the metropolis in search of petrol but only the NNPC mega station is operating and I cannot stand the long queue’’, he said.
A commercial bus driver, Chijioke Agu, said he increased bus fare due to the scarcity and urged the government to do something urgently to save the situation. Another motorist, Mrs Anthonia Ugwu, said she parked her vehicle at home and took her children to school in a taxi.
NAN reports that the federal government on Tuesday announced that it would shut down and revoke licences of marketers who defaulted in implementing the new pump price.

The Professor Said That There Is No God. The Student Gave Him an Inimitable Answer!

An atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class and then asks one of his new students to stand:

‘You’re a Christian, aren’t you, son?’

‘Yes sir,’ the student says.

‘So you believe in God?’

‘Absolutely. ’

‘Is God good?’

‘Sure! God’s good.’

‘Is God all-powerful? Can God do anything?’

‘Yes.’

‘Are you good or evil?’

‘The Bible says I’m evil.’

The professor grins knowingly. ‘Aha! The Bible! He considers for a moment. ‘Here’s one for you. Let’s say there’s a sick person over here and you can cure him. You can do it. Would you help him? Would you try?’

‘Yes sir, I would.’

‘So you’re good…!’

‘I wouldn’t say that.’

‘But why not say that? You’d help a sick and maimed person if you could. Most of us would if we could. But God doesn’t.’

The student does not answer, so the professor continues. ‘He doesn’t, does he? My brother was a Christian who died of cancer, even though he prayed to Jesus to heal him. How is this Jesus good? Can you answer that one?’

The student remains silent. ‘No, you can’t, can you?’ the professor says. He takes a sip of water from a glass on his desk to give the student time to relax ‘Let’s start again, young fella. Is God good?’

‘Er…yes,’ the student says.

‘Is Satan good?’

The student doesn’t hesitate on this one. ‘No.’

‘Then where does Satan come from?’

The student falters. ‘From God’

‘That’s right. God made Satan, didn’t he? Tell me, son. Is there evil in this world?’

‘Yes, sir…’

‘Evil’s everywhere, isn’t it? And God did make everything, correct?’

‘Yes.’

‘So who created evil?’ The professor continued, ‘If God created everything, then God created evil, since evil exists, and according to the principle that our works define who we are, then God is evil.’

Again, the student has no answer. ‘Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things, do they exist in this world?’

The student squirms on his feet. ‘Yes.’

‘So who created them?’

The student does not answer again, so the professor repeats his question. ‘Who created them?’ There is still no answer. Suddenly the lecturer breaks away to pace in front of the classroom. The class is mesmerized. ‘Tell me,’ he continues onto another student. ‘Do you believe in Jesus Christ, son?’

The student’s voice betrays him and cracks. ‘Yes, professor, I do.’

The old man stops pacing. ‘Science says you have five senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Have you ever seen Jesus?’

‘No sir. I’ve never seen Him.’

‘Then tell us if you’ve ever heard your Jesus?’

‘No, sir, I have not…’

‘Have you ever felt your Jesus, tasted your Jesus or smelt your Jesus? Have you ever had any sensory perception of Jesus Christ, or God for that matter?’

‘No, sir, I’m afraid I haven’t.’

‘Yet you still believe in him?’

‘Yes.’

‘According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your God doesn’t exist… What do you say to that, son?’

‘Nothing,’ the student replies… ‘I only have my faith.’

‘Yes, faith,’ the professor repeats. ‘And that is the problem science has with God. There is no evidence…only faith.’

The student stands quietly for a moment, before asking a question of His own. ‘Professor, is there such thing as heat? ’

‘Yes.’

‘And is there such a thing as cold?’

‘Yes, son, there’s cold too.’

‘No sir, there isn’t.’

The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested. The room suddenly becomes very quiet. The student begins to explain. ‘You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, unlimited heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don’t have anything called ‘cold’. We can hit d own to 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold; otherwise we would be able to go colder than the lowest –458 degrees. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-458 F) is the total absence of heat. You see, sir, ‘cold’ is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot .
